I'm a little over half way through 'A Gathering Storm' with my local group and have had several rain/thunderstorm tracks that play constantly while in session. It has made a huge difference in supporting the overall oppressive mood that the constant rain causes to the party. I have been using the storm progress trackers and the resilience checks to great effect as well. In any given encounter, there is at least one or two pcs with the Under the Weather condition. These are all great reminders of what the weather is like and sets the overall tone of the adventure quite nicely.

1.) It is really hard to say, but many seem to think that major new releases for the game are starting to wind down. However the Print On Demand service (POD) is an easy way for FFG to continue to support the game with regular content, and they have been doing that consistently for the past year or so since it was introduced. You will hear a lot of people say the game is dead, and the game is alive. In my opinion it doesn't matter too much one way or another, they have released a huge amount of content in the last 3 years. I'd love to see more, but there is SO much content between 2nd and 3rd edition which can be easily converted, a lack of content and lore should never be an issue.

2.) Yes I do plan to go again this year along with a few of our hosts and friends and regulars. Happy to hook up and get some games on while there.

Just found your podcast (link in your sig on the FFG forums) and am about half way through episode 0 (i have allot of listening to do to catch up!). I've been playing Table-top GW games since about '89 and got into WFRP 3rd with some friends about a year and a half ago. We played through Day Late, Eye for an Eye, and part of Journey to Black Fire Pass before I broke down and pretty much got everything that was available at the time. I started running Gathering Storm for our group and got through the first act before we sort of petered out. Recently, we all cleared up our schedules and we are diving back in where we left off. If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions...

1.) I just made an order for the Creature Vault, Black Fire Pass, Signs of Faith, and Omens of War...and couldn't find anywhere online that had the dice packs in stock. Checking threads on BGG and FFG, this seems to have been an issue for a while now... You seem to be in the know, are FFG winding down this product line? Is it in danger of being discontinued now that they've just barely fleshed out all of the core rules?

2.) I heard you mention KublaCon in Episode 0. We are down on the central coast, near Cal Poly, and I have been the last few years to play in the Warmachine tournaments there...I am seriously considering leaving the minis at home and looking for some WFRP sessions there this time around. Are you, or any of your group planning on running anything this year?

Eair, you are quite right. We got caught up in the moment of the game and instead of stopping the flow to look up the specific rule i chose to wing it and get 'close enough'. Though you do bring up an interesting point about passing out when past your WT. I hadn't considered that you only die from wounds at that point but it makes sense.

Regarding dishing out critical wounds, I as the GM really wanted to get everyone busted up since it was the finale and the fighting was getting crazy. We took a few liberties to wrap things up in as cinematic way as possible. =)

Really enjoyed listening to this adventure, but you guys were killing me with the Crit rules. You only die from crits if you get knocked out from wounds and have more crits than Toughness. If you pass out for any other reason (i.e. stress) you don't die, even if you have more crits than T. Also if you only only take damage from minimum wound result. All crits get converted to normal wounds (i.e. 7 damage +2 crits vs 4 toughness + 3 soak=2 wounds). I'm not sure if you talked about this in the new Pod cast, as I will be playing with my group and can't listen. Can't wait until we are done though, so i can listen. Keep it up. Love listening to you guys.

About the bum knee; why don't you just give the character an appropriate Severe Injury or maybe a permanent Critical Wound?
Mangled Limb is nice, but a bit harsh - maybe Nagging Injury. I don't have Omens of War, so I can't really make suggestions about Severe Injuries.
Maybe give him a couple of experience points to compensate?

Woot! Someone used the word Scofflaw in context!

Fun episode, I always think the adventures that throw a party together, rather than being a party already, make for the best stories. Friends overcoming difficulties in a quest is fun to hear but strangers with reason to distrust one another, who bicker and fight amongst themselves as much as them fight 'evil'... that's good listening!

if you were using the party card the tension meter would have burst into flames.

this situation while entertaining is why i always have the PCs know each other and trust each enough to work together in situations where their lives could be on the line.

at this point i dont think it would be "realistic" for prudence and dave's character to ever travel together let alone trust each enough to fight a combat where their lives are on the line with the other character nearby. i am quite curious how this is going to be resolved :)

Guys, not sure what is happening for you regarding accessing the episodes. Can you let me know how you are trying to access them? iTunes? What version. Can you access the by downloading them from our site? By clicking the play link and listening to them via the in browser player? Help me narrow down what works and what doesn't so I can try and look for a fix.

Thanks!

I have to say, that was one of the most fun adventures we have run. It just felt so cinematic in my head while writing it. I hope it came off that way too. Either way it was great seeing everyone have what seemed like a fitting end for each of them.

Chris made a great drawing of Khelga shortly after the turned which i'll probably post some time on the facebook page.

Hi, I like a lot your podcast and have started following the Buried but not Forgotten campaign arc. I write because I have been unable to download episodes 9 and 10. It seems the file is corrupt or something, because it stops at around 5MB while downloading. This is happening both with direct download and using ITunes. This has happened also while trying to download the Raven episode (I have not tried to download others yet).

At the beginning I thought it could be my connection, but I have tried to download other podcasts of similar size and have been able to do it without a problem. I'll try to download them again another day, but just wanted to let you know.

And thanks a lot for sharing the podcast. It has a very good quality and is full of great ideas.

Funny you say that, we just recorded Episode 37, where we discuss the ending and how things could have gone differently.

I think after the horror we all felt, both as characters and players, that we were so traumatized that the unresolved ending was perfectly fitting. We walked out of the house, blinked at the sun, and bleary eyed, walked home without saying a word to anyone. It was like a major mental blow to everyone, where the true horror is that the bad guy got away, and really, everyone loses. #iLoveWarhammer

its funny. in most other rpgs ive played i always feel my characters would be sufficiently motivated to keep adventuring after overcoming even horrific challenges but i think if my character participated in this adventure i would probably retire him after seeing all that. i do think a brief prologue and/or GM behind the scenes cast would be cool though. there is a lot going down in the end.

Regarding the bear/pets in general; I too would be disappointed if I had to direct a pet every round to do the same thing but I think it's already covered under the 'Trick' Talents, they do seem to represent continual actions by the pet, if you want to direct them to do something very different every round that feels more like an action to me.
With regard to continual attacking, perhaps a Trick that inflicts 1 wound to an engaged enemy every round?

I myself would be wary of giving any pets their own turns for fear they would upset/outshine the other players, you are essentially adding a second character for one player.

Just finished this episode as I was listening to one of the "Dwarfs" Audio books from Markus Heitz.
The second part of the adventure is great. Helga is doing crazy stuff and assuming strange plots behind everything. So she is most of the time wrong about their real plan, but at least she knows that something is strange at all. Simply great.

Also when the Ork is killed in the cave, just to handle it story wise is a good move to spare playtime.

Great Episode.

I agree with Bryan.

I prefer playing in scenarios written by the GM. They feel far more personal and are usually more interesting. I think you should do more of these types of episodes, and have a few segments on how to use bad guys and the like.

SBV podcast has entire episodes dedicated to that but you don't need to be like them, just a quick 10 minute section on "Beastmen as antagonists and how to use them in an adventure" or "Types of adventures you could have in the Grey Mountains".

Some little adventure leads which will spark the budding writer to try something other than written adventures. People say that "I only play written adventures because I don;t have time". I find that writing your own work is far quicker and easier than trying to interpret someone else's.

Yes it is rather excessive, I was surprised that everyone I ran it for liked it as it's basically an excuse to read out this think l liked and an excuse to harass players with dickish NPCs (dickish NPCs being a feature in almost all of my games). I could have ran a "safer" scenario and was going to but it was suggested by a few people that I do this one as it's a bit different to the norm.

Definitely not for everyone that's for certain. There certainly is a lot of chatting in this one and it's 100% non combat, did you pick up the clues or did you not like the concept of the final scene?

Thanks for letting me go on and on about scenario authorship. It really is as simple as just writing a 1-10 step railroad for your first one.

Example:
1. How do the PCs get drawn in? (e.g. hired by local merchant, suddenly they are attacked and must seek vengeance, etc.)
2. They found out the problem and have been hired, so they need to go to the library to find out more (or quiz some peasants)
3. They follow their first clue to a combat, which gives them two more clues
4. Their second clue turns out to be a red herring
5. Their third clue leads them to a puzzle or a problem solving issue. (e.g. Bunch of skill checks, or a progress tracker). This gives them a major foretelling about who the big bad evil guy (BBEG) is at the end. They have two new clues towards how to get to the BBEG
6. Clue #1 leads them to another combat with clues or a red herring.
7. Clue #2 leads them to a mysterious location where the BBEG is no longer at (abandoned rebel base).
8. They follow up to the Henchman of the BBEG
9. They fight the BBEG/final showdown.

You can break it down into acts if you need to. Maps and NPCs sometimes help me visually grasp an idea.

Hope this helps!

Haven't even got a chance to listen to this one yet. But playing a few sessions with Phillipe as GM for the OWL was a great gaming experience. Its nice to see the continued collaboration across the Globe (both RW and OW)! Then Phillipe jus sent the OWL folks a link to your reference guide and suddenly all my head scratching and confusion with WFRP v3 was gone (for the most part :-D). You've definitely got a knack for organizing what FFG seems to just at times puke up onto the page leaving the players to sort through the mess! Keep it up and I look forward to listening to this podcast. If you ever want to have an Alaskan gamer on your show let me know ;-).

Sounds like this adventure begs to be filled. Maybe throw in horror at hugedal and/or journey to black fire pass plus a few custom adventures along the way and you could easily make this adventure the basis of a 15-20 3-4 hour per session campaign. Overall quest to push the players travelling further plus whatever else to throw at them along the way.

I stand by my original opinion of good job and best one since witches song (not better than witches song as that's my favourite adventure so I'm biased). If you had the luxury of a long campaign you could foreshadow the big bad. eg dwarf in nearby hold saying "long ago and evil beyond imagination plagued these lands, Mithrad the Dwarfslayer (or something)......". Maybe a statue of a human fighting a similar beast (blown out of proportion due to folklore) in grimstot and a local legend of of it, maybe it was a dwarf and the dwarf is a local legend, saved the town but the evil escaped to hide amongst the hills for all eternity? Maybe come across another abandoned hold with paintings of Mithrads (or whatever it's name was) destruction.

Of course for review and live play purposes your team aims to play as close to the adventure as possible with the resources given to you to provide us with relevant feedback so you could never really do that. Sure HoT has some plot holes but if your a GM with the time on their hands and the motivation to alter written adventures you could fill them in pretty easily by the sounds of it.

You think so Helga? Maybe you shouldn't take his "kindness" at face value. Maybe he knew you were up to something and he bought you the stuffed toy to distract an or shut you up beause he didn't want to deal with the fallout. The same way you would buy a toy for a child to distract them from something.

What do you know about Gromm Helga? Boy your dwarven "friends" sure have changed since he returned. You see them talking amongst each other in Khazalid. You don't know what they're saying. Who's to say there not talking about you?

Don't let the dwarves constant rattling about honour and loyalty fool you. Deep down you know it's all a lie, there just as selfish as an Altdorf street rat. They talk amongst themselves see because they don't want you to hear . They're talking about you lady, how to get rid of you and steal all that gold you've got.

Gromms the problem see, he's the one causing the divide. He aint so high and mighty when he's asleep, maybe you should slip a dagger in his ribs? You know he's going to do it to you. If I were you i'd sleep with a dagger beneath your bedroll, one eye open and be wary next time your "friends" invite you out to the forest all alone.

Can you really trust these dwarves? Do they have your best interests in heart? If so how come they are always trying to get you killed in danerous situations? Food for thought adventurer, that's all......

I think in this episode you mention "A Rough Night At The Three Feathers Inn" as adventure from 2nd edition. Actually, this adventure dates back to times of 1st edition, it was reprinted and updated to 2nd.

This adventure was published in 1st editon module called "The Reckless Dead". I HIGHLY recommend this module as it consist of gems in warhammer's adventures pantheon. Almost all of the adventures published in "The Reckless Dead" are superb. Oh, and I GMed some of them with rules from 3rd edition without any problems. :)

Fen, i'd glad you enjoyed it. I'm curious to hear your thoughts after you hear Episode 35, where we do a breakdown of the adventure and what our thoughts were.

We are gearing up to have Chris (Grom) run The Mirror of Desire (the Slaaneshi adventure from Lure of Power) next. I'm not quite sure how Thorin is going to loose more limbs in this one since it is largely a social adventure but it should be good fun.

Probably your best written adventure yet since the witches song. Sounds like my type of scenario, a bit of travel, shifty npcs with hidden agendas, a bit of greenskin comedy laced with lethality and a bit of Warhammer history with the dwarves. Didn't see the big bad coming though, certainly never came across one of those in my wfrp career but I've always wanted to.

Having Gromm back was great, I felt the dwarfs had gone soft with Helga nagging at them all the time, good to see them returning to their gruff and unaccommodating selves. I like the third wheel feeling, the dwarves and their mates with their injokes and their culture and Helga the human feeling left out to some degree with them not answering her questions and such.

Danger Dave managed to further worsen his position, because of this I am now expecting Thorin to attain at least one permanent wound per adventure, if he doesn't I would feel like I missed out somehow.

Also Helga should consult this following guide on bear handling

Note the diet of bugs, fruit and honey and apparent love of lethargy and Jazz music.

Well I knew some of the real world the stuff about the potato before but made some research on Wikipedia. I was rather surprised that the peanut is from the same corner of the planet. Strangely the Warhammerwisdom was instantly there. :)

As an addition for the quest of the peanut I have forgotten a party in Lustria. The Amazons, surviving Norse Women of an ill fated expedition who rule the land from in their jungle hut towns, scantily clad, blonde and bronze skinned. Like a village full of Jwowws, all the male juice heads are slaughtered after their first night with queen Snooki.

So asking them about the fabled peanut might result in some adult entertainment and/or violence plus an itchy rash.

We love our Nutella here too but peanut butter is definitely more of a staple.

I love your questing idea! I've been toying with the idea of making a Halfling character and I think yours is an interesting character background suggestion -- a well-traveled halfling who is trying to broaden the Empire's palate by finding and introducing exotic foods.

To clarify the peanut butter/jelly question:

In Germany, Italy and France as far as I know there is no real school bread peanut butter fraktion. The place of the sweet and high energetic breadsurface is solely ruled by nutella or simply butter and jelly. You can buy peanutbutter in most german supermarkets today, but its sold number is in no comparison to the sold nutella mountains in the markets.

And as for peanutbutter in the old world. The peanut wasn't common in the middle ages in europe, as the potato wasn't too. Both originate around the andens in south america. The potato was brought into europe around the 16 to 17th century by the spains and englishmen, so maybe the old world has in Tilea and Estilia its first potatohouses in the opening. But the peanut needs tropic or subtropic climates.

As for Helga, maybe you should visit the lizardmen in their steaming jungles in lustria. Maybe they politely offer you a peanutbutter sandwich before they cut your beating heart with a very sharp obsidian knife out.

Another source might be the High Elfes who had a lot of different outposts around the world, some of them in the southern hemisphere. (Citadel of Dusk, Fortress of Dawn) But High elves might be the best lead to find the peanut. As of my dwarven point of view, they always seem to me as the guys who eat their peanut butter sandwich with the edge cut away. :)

But be sure to take the official merchant routes to Lothern in southern Ulthuan or they will burn your ship and let it rot on the bottom of the sea. And never leave the merchant quarter in the city or they will kill you instantly or torture you to death.

So either way, bringing the peanut butter into the old world might be a task for an epic journey through the Known and unknown Warhammer World.

finally caught up today on your live play podcasts and this was by far one of my favorites. i listen to a lot of different podcasts from a variety of systems and warhammer 3E seems to be the best for a live play because a lot of the game terms ie stress and fatigue and the dice results do not break immersion. if you listen to other systems like pathfinder or 4E parts of the session become all math in the case of pathfinder or very video gamey with daily powers, healing surge etc. in 4e. in warhammer 3e many of the mechanical results seem to lead to you guys adding to the story to the explain the mechanic instead of just killing the immersion.

keep up the great work and im hoping you guys are able to tackle the enemy within in podcast form when its released.

No I don't think there is any relationship. The Campaign played 2000 to 1500 years before the current timeline. Also most of the mentioned holds fell in the Dwarf-Elf war. Although the Hold and Elven City are mentioned to be near the Black Sea with no clear location mentioned.

Long Drong the pirate is set around Barak Varr and the Pirate Islands of Sartosa. It is the same Location but the story is quite different. So I don't think there is a connection. But who knows, dwarfs are a stubborn folk, maybe some of the survivors have fled east to Barak Varr during the war.

Hi Nick,
What WFRP does really well is to put tools like the party tension meter in the GM's hands. I use it frequently during the course of play and move it up and down for a number of reasons. I use it to highlight differences among the characters and for punishing break in game flow.
The key is to listen to your players, whenever they are not working together there might be a valid reason for adding tension.

Here is some situations where you can add party tension that I found:
- A character guiding the others through the wilderness gets them lost!
- A character gets a treasure/clue/favor but decides to keep it to themselves. (even if the others are unaware)
- A character leaves the party at a critical time to pursue own agenda.
- In or before a combat encounter, the characters are not in agreement of tactics and start a lengthy discussion about it.
- A character steals, cheats or backstabs another character in the party!
- A character insults or behaves badly towards another party members family/friends/leaders/race/religion.

...and so on.
I find my players are responding well and even roleplaying off the tension meter occasionally. Also, keep in mind that the punishment for advancing up on the meter is not very grave for the players so use it!
